Combining 2013’s ‘The Pillarist’ EP with two new songs, ‘A Tapestry Of Scabs And Skin’ is Astrakhan’s first vinyl release, bringing together elements of progressive sludge and doom with meticulous attention to detail. Traces of early Mastodon and Baroness can be heard here and there, but the Vancouver band have refined a sound that is uniquely their own; fist-pumping metal meets discordant sludge with doomy overtones – essentially all of the finest elements of metal. Second track ‘Blinded By The Diamond Planet’ really highlights Astrakhan’s ambition and grandeur, with Rob Zawistowski’s piercing holler lending a sense of triumph and immediacy to proceedings. Befitting for a band that cites long walks, marine parks, and botanical gardens among their interests.
