German death metal division Revel In Flesh are back with a fourth album and the first thing that is immediately noticeable is the huge amount of melody the band have injected into their sound. However, they have done so without compromising the solid and aggressive death metal onslaught they are known for unleashing on previous recordings.

This added, refined flair and melodic edge just makes the all-out raging heavy parts sound even more devastatingly crushing, and they have managed to meld deathly aggression and melody without one overpowering the other. Dismember comes to mind throughout this album and they are an obvious influence on these Germans and their riff writing.

Vocally it’s very much business as usual; a guttural affair with death growls that powerfully soar above the added melodies, highlighting them even more so and making for a great contrast. There is a very effective mix of tempos with more straight-forward uptempo sections merging into slower sections where the morbid melodies really come to life and are at their most potent.

It will be very interesting to see where they take their sound and progression from here but they have managed to strike the perfect balance between brutal bludgeoning and malevolent melody on this album. A musically mature but malicious death metal assault. Revel In Finesse.
